Manitoba Burled Maple is a decorative wood known for its intricate 3D grain patterns, which is derived from the burls of the Manitoba maple tree, also called the box elder or ash-leaved maple. Because its natural wood is soft and weak, it has been stabilized with acrylic resin to improve its durability.

• Origin: Native to North America, the Manitoba maple tree is also known as box elder or ash-leaved maple.
• Burls: Burls are knot-like growths on trees caused by stress, which create complex and unique grain patterns that are highly valued by woodworkers.
• Wood properties: Manitoba maple is naturally softer, weaker, and lighter than other maple species, making it susceptible to damage.
• Stabilization: To increase its strength and durability, the wood is often stabilized by removing its natural resins and infusing it with an acrylic resin.
• Appearance: The process of stabilization can also allow for dyes to be added, creating vibrant colours not found naturally, such as blue or red.  Green dye was used in this piece accentuating its natural grain patterns while adding a vibrant, custom hue.
