Happy Birthday April babies. You have been blessed with the ‘coveted crystal’ birthstone also known as diamond. Whether it’s a multi-faceted sparkler or raw and uncut, diamonds come in many varieties and have a unique meaning and history that has been inspiring rich, passionate myths of romance, intrigue, power, greed, beauty and magic for centuries.
Adopted from the Greek work adamas, meaning “invincible,” diamonds come in a wide range of colours. The colour is dependent upon the type of impurities that are present in the stone. For instance, yellow stones have minuscule traces of nitrogen while blue ones contain boron. Don’t let the word “impurities” fool you though. Coloured diamonds are natural, rare and truly exotic gems of the earth. Diamonds in hues of yellow, red, pink, blue, and green range in intensity from faint to vivid and generally the more saturated the color, the higher the value.
In ancient times, theories touting the magical powers of diamonds were prevalent: some thought lightning bolts formed diamonds, while other theories asserted that diamonds were the tears of god.
During the Middle Ages, diamonds were thought to hold healing powers and to cure ailments. By heating the crystal and taking it to bed, it was thought to draw out the harmful toxins that were ailing the body.
